Meet Kathryn Wilson, A mum, and successful footwear designer, when it comes to the Kiwi footwear industry Kathryn Wilson is one name you'll hear, her creative, innovative designs are exceptionally high quality. Kathryn launched her label over 15 years ago, releasing works of art in every style, each shoe resonates with wearers differently, transforming their outfit, empowering confidence and revealing aspects of their personalities. We chatted to Kathryn about the balance between motherhood and work and where it all started!
We love the Kathryn Wilson brand! What inspired you to get started?
I started the brand when I was 23 years old as I wanted to be wearing shoes that were limited edition, playful, innovative and affordable. I selfishly design each collection based on what I want to be wearing myself next season!
How has motherhood changed the way you develop products? Where do you draw your inspiration from when recreating new collections?
Ha-ha motherhood changes everything! I am more focused on my tasks when in the office as I know I’m on borrowed time!! I used to spend a lot of time on planes and visiting manufacturers all over the world… I try to achieve a lot over Skype and email these days and limit international travel to 3-4 times a year.
How do you juggle the work-life balance with family?
My husband and I both run our own businesses and there is never a dull moment! Things are always busy for us, so we really appreciate any ‘down-time’ with family and friends. We are learning how to be ‘more present’ at home with Lola and making sure our time together has minimal interruptions from the office.
What is the best thing about being a mother?
Being part of moulding and shaping the way someone can see the world as a wonderful and magical place. Lola Belle turned three this year and is so excited about learning how the world works… my mother taught me to always be optimistic and look at life with a glass ½ full approach… I’m loving sharing the same philosophy with Lola.
What is the hardest thing about being a mother?
Knowing they have to make their own mistakes along the way so they can learn for themselves the best path to take…. I can’t even imagine her going off to school on her own let alone travelling the world one day without me!!
What is one piece of advice you’d give to a new mum?
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be everything to everyone… enjoy every moment and only listen to the advice you like from other mums around you.
What is your little family tradition e.g. Pancakes every Sunday morning...?
Ha-ha oh we have lots of them… family bedtime stories together (including the cat) whenever possible, Friday family dinners, Saturday fluffies after ballet lessons… group cuddles every day when we get home.
What is one thing that you wouldn’t do for your kids?
Let them drink soft drinks!
What is your ultimate indulgence—how do you pamper yourself?
New lingerie or girls day out in a day-spa!
What does your skincare routine look like? Products you can’t live without?
I am very loyal to Dermalogica products for my skincare routine… I have super sensitive skin so I use their Ultra-Calming range and particularly love the ‘Calm Water gel’ as a day moisturiser, I use a mineral powder on top. At night I alternate with Dermalogica's Phyto Replenish oil and Pure Night cream for maximum hydration through the Winter months. The COOLA makeup-up setting spray is my favourite all year round product to apply throughout the day and at outdoor events, with its SPF30 cover.
