You know the feeling. You get off the chairlift at the top of the mountain, squinting into that particular high-altitude brightness, and you think: I should have put on sunscreen.
And then you ski anyway, because the powder is good and the queue for the gondola was long and you'll deal with it at lunch. Except at lunch you're starving and also the nachos are on, so. And by the time you're back at the lodge your nose is the colour of a ripe tomato and your lips feel like paper that's been left in the sun.
We've all been there. Here's how to not be there this year.

Why the Mountain Is Surprisingly Brutal on Skin
A few things happen at altitude that work against you:
• UV intensity increases by around 4-5% for every 300 metres of elevation. The top of Mt Hutt or Cardrona sits well above 1500m. Do the maths.
• Snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays — so you're being hit from above and below simultaneously.
• Cold, dry air at altitude strips the skin barrier faster than any indoor heating system.
• Wind amplifies all of the above, and then also just dries your lips out for fun.
The result: one day on the slopes without SPF can do significantly more damage than a day at the beach. Which is not something most people have been told.
The Snow-Day Kit Worth Packing
You don't need much. You need it to work, to survive a jacket pocket, and to be easy enough to reapply over gloves without a production number. Here's what earns a place in the bag:

COOLA Classic Sunscreen Stick SPF 30 — Tropical Coconut
This is the one. A solid stick format that goes on clean, absorbs quickly, and doesn't require taking your gloves off to apply. The Tropical Coconut scent is an absurd and wonderful contrast to being surrounded by snow — like a holiday-within-a-holiday. It's made with COOLA's Plant Protection® complex, water-resistant, and genuinely pocket-friendly. Reapplyevery two hours, especially if you're sweating or the light is bright.

Classic Liplux® Lip Balm SPF 30
Your lips have no melanin and no natural oil glands. They are completely unprepared for a New Zealand ski day. The Classic Liplux® is SPF 30, water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, and packed with Cupuaçu Butter and Raspberry Seed Oil to nourish while it protects. Keep one in every jacket pocket. Give one to the friend who always forgets.

Face SPF — whatever's in your daily routine
Apply before you leave the lodge. Reapply at lunch. The COOLA face lotions absorb fast enough that they work under a ski goggle without drama.
One More Thing
Being outside in the NZ mountains in winter is genuinely one of the great privileges of living here. The light, the air, the particular silence that comes with fresh snow. It's worth protecting so you can keep doing it — not just this season, but for seasons to come.
A bit of SPF and a decent lip balm is a very small price of entry.
